Love the Blacksmiths? Help us forge a great awards show!

By J.D. Bruewer

PRSA has given me many opportunities to grow as a PR professional. The people I’ve met have made me better at what I do and challenged me to grow.

After all PRSA has done for me, I’m glad to be able to give back a little. I believe that what makes our chapter great is the combined effort of all our members.

I’m pleased to be a co-chair of the 2016 Blacksmith Awards along with Joy Landry of Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services. The Blacksmith Awards are Cincinnati PRSA’s biggest annual event, where we honor the best in our field.

The 2015 event at Bell Event Center with Master of Ceremonies Betsy Ross was a great night of celebration and recognition. It will be hard to top, but that is our goal this year.

We could use your help. There are several ways to contribute.

You can serve on the Blacksmith committee to help us plan the event and coordinate the judging.

You can be a judge of our partner chapter’s contest. We partner with another PRSA chapter each year to judge each other’s contests. Last year we worked with the Rochester, N.Y., chapter, judging entries in April.

You can share your ideas. Do you have any suggestions about the awards or event?  If you haven’t shared them in a survey or other forum, feel free to email them to me.

If you are interested in helping in one of these areas, email me at

You can be a sponsor, or help us find sponsors. Our sponsors get recognition on stage and in print during our spotlight event. The sponsorships also help make the event great.  Sponsors can be agencies or organizations that practice PR; they can also be vendors that provide services like printing, web design, writing and consulting. If you are interested in being a sponsor, or know someone who is, email Coral Dill at

November seems a long way off right now, as we anxiously await spring, but it will be here before we know it. Please consider how you might be able to help, and let us know.

If you are reading this and think you want to help PRSA, but the Blacksmith Awards aren’t your thing, fear not, there are other ways to help. Click on the Serve Your Chapter link to find other ways to help.

We welcome your involvement and, with your help, look forward to a great future for Cincinnati PRSA.
