New Member Spotlight - August 2014

Here’s a look at some of Cincinnati PRSA’s newest members

Name: Jake Hawkins Company: Copperfox Marketing Role: Public Relations & Content Strategist Twitter handle: @jakeh91 What do you enjoy most about your job? I love constantly learning about new subjects, new clients and being able to continuously ask questions. I also enjoy playing a role in the overall changing landscape of mass communication. Why PR? What brought you to the field? At my core I’m a writer, and I’m also naturally curious. PR allows me to flex both of those muscles. Writing happens on a daily basis for countless mediums and genres. The curious side of my brain is fulfilled in PR by being able to be, in many cases, the first outside audience for clients. The idea of asking those first questions and helping build a message that sufficiently answers those was really attractive to me. If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why? That’s a tough one… Would they be in my time? Could I change history? I’ll make it less complicated and go with George Washington to just ask a few questions...

Name: Owen Serey Company: Scripps National Spelling Bee Role: Communication Specialist Twitter handle: @OwenSerey What do you enjoy most about your job? My background is in sports broadcasting and PR, so the Scripps National Spelling Bee has allowed me to recapture the excitement of PR for a large, competition-based event. It’s also very rewarding to see how an academic competition can capture the nation’s attention for a few days every May. Why PR? What brought you to the field? When I realized in high school that God did not give me the athletic ability to play sports professionally, I figured a career in broadcasting would keep me close to the games I loved. Broadcasting and media/public relations are rolled into one job at the lower levels of Minor League Baseball, and over the course of time, I transitioned away from the broadcast booth into a dedicated PR role, which led me to where I am today. If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why? Jesus, because even if you account for differences in religious beliefs, there is no one in history who has influenced the lives of as many people as Jesus.

Name: Danielle Craig Company: Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Role: Director of Communications Twitter handle: @ppswo What do you enjoy most about your job? I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team of intelligent, dedicated and mission-driven people.  I’ve been here only a short time, but I’ve learned so much.  Every day is different and the work has real purpose, which is something I’ve never experienced before. Why PR? What brought you to the field? My background is in marketing and communications and PR tends to fall under that realm. Over the years, I’ve taken on more and more PR responsibilities.  It’s always been an area of interest for me, but now I’m in a position where I need to think about PR differently and I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can. If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?  Oh, there are so many!  It would be impossible to choose one, but I’m most fascinated by women who ignored traditional societal expectations and dedicated their lives to women’s rights causes, especially during times when women really didn’t have a voice. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger, and Betty Friedan are a few good examples. Even today, I see disparities in the workplace and I often wonder what women stronger than me would do about it.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why? If I could meet any, one historical figure, I would choose Princess Diana. She was exemplary. Her compassion, generosity and vulnerability was truly inspiring, as evidenced by her still being called out as one of the most influential people of our time.
