Position: Proposal Writer

SUMMARY

The Proposal Writer position at Miami University will primarily be responsible for researching and writing proposals for individual donors with major and principal gift level capacity. Working within the Division of University Advancement and under the direction of the Director of Creative and Editorial Services, this position will serve a vital role in the Advancement Communications, Marketing, Events and IT department in helping to propel the University’s fundraising efforts forward. In addition to researching and writing proposals for major and principal gifts, this individual will also help lead and plan the coordinated process for all proposals and cases for support requested of and produced by the department. This includes working closely with the in-house design team to create adaptable proposal templates as well as other collateral to be used by development officers in their fundraising efforts.

DUTIES

  • Efficiently and accurately draft major gift and principal gift proposals. This position may manage 3-5 proposals in a given week, which requires organization and careful collaboration with gift officers, as well as colleagues from other areas of the university.

  • Support the Director of Creative and Editorial Services in tracking and managing proposal requests and progress on a weekly basis.

  • Help develop gift officer collateral (e.g., FAQ documents, gift opportunity descriptions, cases for support), as requested.

  • Help develop or partner on other initiative-related materials related to University fundraising efforts (ie Center annual fund appeals, event invitations for prospects, etc).

  • Provide editing support for proposals completed by other colleagues, checking for style and grammatical accuracy, as well as messaging consistency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • At least 3 years of professional work experience in advancement, alumni relations, communications, or similar work required (a combination of experience and education, including internships, co-ops and freelance work may be considered)

  • Excellent verbal and writing skills, organizational and project management skills, and exacting attention to detail

  • Strong commitment to client service

  • Ability to collaborate across a broad institutional framework ranging

  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications or journalism, or a Master’s degree

  • 5 years of donor proposal writing experience

  • Experience researching and writing donor proposals, grants or stewardship reports

  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite

  • Experience managing multi-faced, short-, mid- and long-term projects

  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the university’s technology tools including Banner and Reher (the university's donor relationship management system)

  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to work on projects both collectively and autonomously

  • Proficient knowledge of AP style

  • Proficient in PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and Excel
