April Luncheon Highlights

Several in attendance sported their favorite bowtie in honor of our speaker, Bengals NFL Linebacker Dhani Jones and his signature line of bow ties, Bow Ties for a Cause, which are aimed to increase awareness and funds for non-profit organizations around the country. Dhani shared with us how to create a sustainable cause-marketing program, as well as details on how he fueled his passion to become an entrepreneur, environmental philanthropist and a community volunteer and most significantly how important it is for us to put our money and actions where our heart is and do good for the causes we believe in. Check out some photos from the event below:

Blacksmith Awards
Blacksmith Awards Highlight

Mark your calendar for the 2011 Blacksmith Awards Ceremony on November 16 at The Madison Event Center, and look for program entry information in June!

Each month leading up to the annual Blacksmith Awards Ceremony, we’ll highlight one of last year’s winners and share a tip from the entrant that can help you with your 2011 entries.

Blacksmith Award winner for News Conference/Publicity Stunt:

Drake Center: Amber Gray Goes Home

Amber Gray was a Lakota West High School Basketball star who was recruited to play at the top-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers program. At 19, she had suffered a stroke due to a ruptured aneurysm following elective shoulder surgery. After just 30 days of rehabilitation, she would walk out of The Drake Center without assistance. Her story had all the elements of a miracle: A devastating loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament possibly saved her life because it led to a surgery and the discovery of the aneurysm. A press conference was scheduled to highlight her amazing story and the doctors and nurses who helped her during the recovery.

For the press conference, Drake targeted local media, national sports media and outlets in Knoxville, Tenn. The conference allowed Amber to tell her remarkable story and field questions about her future athletic plans. It also gave Drake Center Medical Director Dr. Goddard the opportunity to disseminate both accurate and educational information about strokes, aneurysms, recovery, and the remarkable work that happens at Drake.

Media coverage following the event surpassed all expectations with local media attention and national media such as Fox News and ESPN as well as coverage in Tennessee markets. The advertising equivalency value of the news conference exceeded $335,000. Most importantly, it met three primary goals: allowing Amber to tell her story, positioned Drake as a regional and national leader in rehabilitative care, and tied to Drake’s advertising campaign, “Real People. Remarkable Recoveries.”

Blacksmith Award Winner Tip:

Media is “immediate.” Always act fast to push your stories out, and make it easy for reporters to reach you no matter what time of day.

What do you find the most beneficial about Cincinnati PRSA? I both enjoy and appreciate the multiple networking opportunities that allow me to keep in touch with other young professionals that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to meet or communicate with.

Whom do you suggest your fellow chapter members follow on Twitter and why? Not Charlie Sheen

You're in PR which means you're interesting by default! Tell us one fun fact about you: My husband and I started dating in high school, and everyone thought we were destined to be together because we were Jenny and Kenny. Now that we are married, everyone believes we are destined to have children named Lenny, Denny and Benny. Thankfully, we have control over that destiny. But not liking to disappoint, we recently added a new member to our family. She is a collie/shepherd mix…and her name is Penny!

Study shows age and experience not substitutes for Accreditation

Anne Peru Knabe

PR Review, April 11, 2011

Recent survey results published in the Public Relations Review debunk the assumption that age and experience can substitute for a practitioner obtaining Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).

“We were surprised to find when you look at Accreditation, age and experience together, the effects are not uniform. It really depends on what category of work and professional competencies you look at,” said Dr. Bey-Ling Sha, APR, author of the study, “Does Accreditation Really Matter in Public Relations Practice?”

“A lot of people use experience as an excuse for not getting an APR — yet, these results clearly show experience in PR does not equal Accreditation. Conversely, the study does not suggest Accreditation can substitute for experience,” said Sha, an associate professor at the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University and a member of PRSA’s Universal Accreditation Board.

Researchers sent the survey to 9,950 randomly selected PRSA members. Respondents answered questions about the work they did in 12 different categories and 10 professional competencies, called Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). The results show significant differences in the frequency of execution between APRs and non-APRs in seven  work categories and seven KSAs.
