A campaign to promote ThermaCare products is now being directed towards men with menstrual cramps. Yes, you read that right: “Men with cramps”.
According to an article called “Online, P&G Gets a Little Crazy,” by Stuart Elliot, posted on New York Times Online, Proctor and Gamble is taking a new approach in reaching consumers: marketing in non-traditional ways via “irrelevant humor”.
The $1 million dollar budget for the “Men with Cramps” campaign consists of two websites, a fake documentary and video clips, all produced and collected by an imaginary institution supposedly studying the problem. The nontraditional campaign was produced by the idea of women wishing men could fathom the pain and annoyance caused by menstrual cramps.
“We simply didn’t have enough women who knew about our menstrual product, and had to find a new way to connect with them,” said Mr. O’Brien, associate marketing director for personal health care at Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati. “And given how tough a subject it is, we had to find the right way to show women we empathize with them.”
With the difficulties of reaching every consumer through traditional T.V and print ads, Proctor and Gamble hopes to reach audiences in other ways such as pod casts, blogs, video games, and email messages.
P & G decided to introduce the “Men with Cramps” campaign in phases, to “build a little mystery in Internet-land, and get people talking about whether men could have cramps,” said Meredith Yacso, ThermaCare brand manager at Procter.
The campaign initiated with classified ads in local newspapers around the country asking “Men: Are You Suffering From Menstrual Cramps?” The ads also provided a website—menwithcramps.com—where those interested could go and find out more information. The website is monitored by Kurt and Gunn Associates in New York, an agency that specializes in interactive campaigns.
Already the results are positive. After the first ads were released, the campaign prompted discussion on websites, blogs, and even “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. By using word-of-mouth marketing, also known as buzz marketing, the name of ThermaCare had begun to spread.
Next, the fake documentary was released by Gunn in which it was explained how men suffering from menstrual cramps had affected the course of history. This attracted attention to the website for the faux institute, MacInnes and Porritt, who were supposedly seeking volunteers for research.
Video clips are also on the agenda. They demonstrate the results of “the research” by comically interviewing men in a variety of professions such as bakers and taxi drivers. Comedian/actor Ed Herbstam, also a partner of the Gunn agency, even poses as a doctor. Recent additions to the videos include references to ThermaCare, indicating that the campaign is promoting an actual product and not just “an elaborate practical joke.”
Whether consumers are viewing the “Men with Cramps” videos on YouTube or menwithcramps.com, thus far the purpose of this campaign using irrelevant humor has been accomplished: people are talking about ThermaCare. The full effects of the campaign are too early to judge, but so far, P & G’s outside of the box thinking seems to be paying off.
“We’re feeling great about the amount of overall buzz,” said Yacso “For instance, the results for Google searches of the phrase ‘men with cramps’ are yielding results ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.”

As this article is being read several hundred PRSSA members will be gathering in sunny San Diego for the 2008 National Assembly. An event of inspiration and imagination, students will come together to make decisions and reflect on the best practices of their chapters. Perhaps the most exciting part of the Assembly is not the event, but affects of the event.
In 2007, NKU PRSSA sent Josh Rodamer to the National Assembly in Nashville. This appeared to be an amazing opportunity for one member, but developed into a slue of opportunities for the chapter. Josh returned from the assembly with ideas from other chapters and a realization of how NKU students stood up to other PRSSA members. This one event, created the driving force that turned the 2007-2008 Academic year into the most successful year yet for NKU PRSSA.
During this time relationships were established with the National Committee, involvement increased at chapter events and PRSA events, and membership nearly doubled. However, the most important change during the past year has been in the members at NKU PRSSA. Realizing that they have the power to alter their career path, students are grabbing at opportunities to improve professionally and academically. Members have set goals, and contain the determination and self-discipline to reach them.
Although the National Assembly is primarily a business meeting for PRSSA, it has the power to bring much more to its attendees and the chapters they represent. The importance of sending at least one member to such an event should not be down played or pushed aside. Sophocles said, “Success is dependent on effort.” Inspiring events produce inspired people; inspired people produce the required effort to succeed.

Project U is in full swing as the PRSSA Club at Xavier University attempts to Debunkify the campus! Members of PRSSA have been very busy for the past few months with the start of our Debunkify campaign. The campaign is a competition between universities in Ohio aimed at bringing the anti-smoking message to your campus. Xavier PRSSA members have kept the campaign moving by planning different events for students on campus to bring awareness about the dangers of smoking. We started our campaign by hosting our first on campus event, a Mascot Competition, on January 31. The night was filled with music, pizza, free shirts, and of course the competition to be our Debunkify mascot. The night ended with the crowning of Ray O’Brien as our new Debunkify mascot winner! Along with the PRSSA Project U team, Ray was featured in a video clip available on YouTube talking about why it is “sexy” to be smoke free. Our next event was held on campus while students waited in line in the Cintas Center for tickets for the upcoming Xavier men’s basketball game. It was early in the morning, so Project U members provided coffee and free shirts to the students waiting in line. We also brought along a member from the Xavier camera crew to tape students telling us why they like to stay smoke free. The most recent event, Battle of the Bands, took place on February 28th. The event featured six bands to compete for $250! With our greatest turn out to date, guests enjoyed the live music, pizza, shirts, and pens! In the end, we crowned No Fumar as the winner of the Battle of the Bands for their musical talent and great anti-smoking message! We still have three more events left in the campaign, and so far everything has been a great success. The Project U team is very proud to be able to bring the anti-smoking message to the Xavier campus. With our next event, A Night of Debunkery on March 13th, fast approaching Project U members have been keeping very busy!
Along with all of the work that PRSSA members have been putting into the Project U campaign, we have also been very busy with events strictly for PR majors. At our PRSSA meeting on February 25th a former Xavier student, Ann Tassone, came to speak to the club about what it was like for her in making the transition from student to practitioner. At our most recent meeting, members were able to take a tour of the Northlich agency on March 10. Also, PRSSA members are looking forward to our next meeting on April 14th when our guest speaker, Julie Stewart, will be talking to us about summer jobs, internships, and portfolios.

F.I.N.S. Program

(Flash ID –N- Save)
The F.I.N.S. program is designed to offer PRSA members an easy, short-step option toward purchasing tickets to the Newport Aquarium at a discount.
What is F.I.N.S.?
F.I.N.S. is an acronym for “Flash ID -N- Save”. When members come to the Newport Aquarium, have them show their organization’s ID badge at the ticket window. The Newport Aquarium is able to provide preprinted cards with PRSA’s name on them to be distributed soon to members. These cards will act as an ID badge. The member and their guests will receive discounted ticket prices. (They must have their current, valid, organization ID to receive the discount.) Showing their organization’s ID badge will provide a $2 discount for each adult and child ticket purchased and a $3 discount for every senior ticket purchased. This discount will be taken off of the regular general admission price.
Some of the unique benefits of this program are:
- No out-of-pocket money needed prior to a visit.
- No worries about losing a paper ticket.
- Member discount applies every day of the year…. no expiration date.
- Discounts can be applied to every visit members make to the aquarium, as long as they show a current, valid, member ID badge at the ticket window.
The Newport Aquarium reserves the right to change the General Admission Price, and/or benefit(s) to the F.I.N.S. Program at any time during the Agreement.
Laura Rusche is now at Susan G. Komen for the Cure as their Fund Development and Marketing Director.
