With my first newsletter as Chapter President, I’d like to wish each of you happy holidays. As the New Year QUICKLY approaches, I’d also like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past year and to express some of my goals for the upcoming year.
As a chapter, 2006 was a fabulous year. While I would have a difficult time naming every accomplishment, I would like to call your attention to a few of our chapter’s most notable achievements:
- Our new professionals group has flourished. PRSA’s newest members have done an excellent job over the past year and if their accomplishments are any indication, the future of the Cincinnati chapter is bright.
- The mentoring program has gotten off to a wonderful start. This program, offers newer professionals the unique opportunity of learning from some of our community’s most seasoned PR professionals. A sincere thank you to all the mentors who generously offered their time!
- Event programming has continued to draw record crowds to our monthly meetings.
- The second installment of the Blacksmith Awards was a great success. What a great opportunity to recognize the excellent public relations work we do here in the Greater Cincinnati area.
- We also have a completely redesigned chapter Web site. www.cincinnatiprsa.com looks great, is easy to navigate, and continues to serve as an excellent resource for information about the chapter, jobs in the region and upcoming chapter events.
- In addition, the chapter is in sound financial shape and our membership continues to grow. Thank you to the entire 2006 leadership team and to everyone who participated in a chapter event last year. It’s truly a great time to belong to Cincinnati PRSA!
So, it is my job this year to expand on the success of the past few years and continue to lead the chapter to provide members networking, programming and recognition opportunities. I intend to expand our educational programming and hope to create additional networking opportunities for our chapter. We have also put together additional working committees to ensure that we continue to deliver excellent service to our valued membership.
- If you have a suggestion or comment, I’d love to hear from you. I firmly believe that together, we can make Cincinnati one of the premier PRSA chapters in the East Central District and the country. Please feel free to contact me anytime at: ldoxsee@northlich.com
Here’s to a fun and exciting 2007! Have a happy and safe holiday season!

PRSA Accreditation is the worldwide credential of competence in public relations. The Cincinnati chapter stands ready to help you achieve this important step in your career! An APR review class is held each year and APR accreditation chair Connie Kolita will help "coach" candidates through the process.
Achieving Your APR: The Steps
Typically the process goes like this:
- Take Cincinnati PRSA’s APR Review Class (highly recommended!) The next class is expected to take place in Spring of 2007. It's a two-hour class once a week for eight or nine weeks (location TBD), plus study groups if desired. There is a class textbook to study along with handouts and the PRSA Code of Ethics.
- Send APR application to PRSA National (New York City, available on National's website listed below). From the day National approves your application you have one year to complete the process.
- Sit for and advance through the “oral portion” of APR, which is called “Readiness Review”. There are two documents you'll need to complete for this:
- Candidate’s Readiness Review Questionnaire
- PR Plan.
- Sit for and advance through the “written portion” which is the "computer-based examination". This examination is taken at a ProMetric testing center locally.
- Celebrate! (FYI, this process typically takes three to six months.)
By Connie Kolita, APR
Are you an APR interested in sitting on a local APR Readiness Review panel? You’ll earn APR credit.
For more information about any of the blurbs above, contact Cincinnati Accreditation Chair Connie Kolita at KolitaCM@fhlbcin.com. You can also read about accreditation on the PRSA National web site, www.prsa.org, click on Accreditation (APR) link. back to top

Hello.
My name is Jungwon Lee, a graduate student studying public relations at the University of Georgia under the direction of Dr. Bryan H. Reber. I am writing to ask if you would volunteer to take part in a web survey for my Master's thesis. Your opinion is imperative; your professional insights will contribute to an academic effort to help build the body of knowledge in public relations.
The purpose of my thesis is to examine public relations practitioners' attitudes about contingencies in decision-making in a conflict situation with an external public, and its relationship with the work-related cultural values. Based on valuable insights from PR practitioners like you, this study will provide a better understanding of the dynamic variables that affect the organization's willingness to dialogue with external publics. This survey is also being sent to South Korean practitioners to look for any cultural differences.
Here are some issues regarding your participation in this survey:
** The link below will take you to the web survey. Please read the introductions carefully and answer the survey questions. The survey will take about 15-20 minutes.
** When you feel that you do not have enough time to complete this survey at one time, you could also leave the survey and then resume it later by clicking "save & continue this survey later" on the left top of the survey screen. By default, the web survey places a cookie on your browser, so you will be routed to the last completed page you left off from when you resume, as long as you use the same computer.
Below is the link to the web survey. Please click on this link or copy and paste it onto your web browser.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?A=163807097E28906
Please let me know (jungwon@uga.edu) if you have any questions about this survey or any problems with completing the survey. Again, your opinion is desperately needed and sincerely valued! Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Jungwon Lee back to top

Celebrity endorsements have been a driving force in the marketing and advertising world with stars like basketball’s Michael Jordan, Bono of U2, and golf pro Tiger Woods topping the charts. However, with a media-saturated consumer base, there is a growing debate about the effects celebrities have on sales. Companies are finding they must change their approach to selling, or risk suffering the economic consequences.
Throughout the history of mass media, celebrities have been enlisted in campaigns for major companies throughout the world. For example, actress Betty Grable was the spokesperson for Motorola radios in the 1940s.
Today, celebrities such as Bono or soccer star David Beckham represent communications conglomerates. Star endorsements like these help bring in billions of dollars each year to big-name companies.
Like the companies they represent, these stars see no shortage of income from their promotions. Tiger Woods, representing Nike, GM (Buick), American Express and others, makes an estimated $87 million in endorsement deals yearly. According to the article Dream Endorser: Tiger Woods as a Giant of Marketing ROI published in Advertising Age, his endorsement has generated approximately $650 million in sales for Nike alone.
Companies understand the money and power that using celebrities for endorsements generates. In a recent study completed by the Singapore Polytechnic School of Business and published in The Business Times Singapore, 68.3 percent of respondents said a celebrity endorsement would be a deciding factor when purchasing a hair-care or beauty product, while only 36.7 percent of respondents said a celebrity endorsement would be useful when buying sports equipment.
So how is it that companies such as Nike can continue to pay high sums of money to celebrities whose impact is not even 50 percent effective?
The answer is corporations are forced to change their tactics. In 1996, Nike signed Tiger Woods, and his campaign was so successful that two years later Nike created “Nike Golf.” With Woods promoting their new apparel, balls, and clubs, the line was a success. Giving Woods his own line of clothing specifically targeted golfers, a previously overlooked market, and allowed Nike to increase its market share and profits.
Motorola is one company branching out into the technologically savvy markets, which, contrary to popular belief, are not located in the U.S. Mike Hughlett of the Chicago Tribune writes that the expanding markets are in countries like China, Brazil, and India. For this reason, the face of Motorola is not one person, but celebrities specific to these areas of the world, such as David Beckham, European soccer star, and Abhishek Bachchan, Indian heartthrob movie star. Using faces familiar to different areas around the world allows the cell phone company to reach consumers around the globe on a personal level, without changing their message.
Changing the face of the message is exactly what McDonalds did in China, launching its “I’m lovin’ it” campaign with the popular singer Lee-Hom Wang.
“It’s necessary for brands to incorporate relevant celebrities into their PR campaigns to stay current and ‘cool’ in consumers’ eyes,” said Jill Borkan, account supervisor at New York-based Alison Brod Public Relations.
The key to a successful celebrity spokesperson involves choosing a representative who fits the brand. According to Randi Schmelzer’s article Lending Star Power to Your Brand, published in PR Week USA, Niki Ostin, account supervisor at LA-based Clifford PR, agrees that smart celebrity integration can lend authority to a brand as well as help the company target a specific audience.
Of Tiger Woods’s attributes, Sports Business Group president David Carter, says, “Likeability, believability and popularity. Nobody else has that combination.” For Nike, Tiger Woods fit its style, values and products to a “tee”. back to top

This program began April 1st - look for ID cards at PRSA Luncheons
What is F.I.N.S.?
F.I.N.S. is an acronym for "Flash ID -N- Save". When members come to the Newport Aquarium, have them show their organization's ID badge at the ticket window. The Newport Aquarium is able to provide preprinted cards with PRSA's name on them to be distributed soon to members. These cards will act as an ID badge. The member and their guests will receive discounted ticket prices (they must have their current, valid, organization ID to receive the discount). Showing their organization's ID badge will provide a $2 discount for each adult and child ticket purchased and a $3 discount for every senior ticket purchased. This discount will be taken off of the regular general admission price.
Some of the unique benefits of this program are:
• No out-of-pocket money needed prior to a visit.
• No worries about losing a paper ticket.
• Member discount applies every day of the year. No expiration date.
• Discounts can be applied to every visit members make to the aquarium, as long as they show a current, valid, member ID badge at the ticket window.
The Newport Aquarium reserves the right to change the General Admission Price, and/or benefit(s) to the F.I.N.S. Program at any time during the Agreement.
