Note from the Editor
What a stellar past month for Cincinnati PRSA! We honored two deserving individuals with two very prestigious chapter awards (find out who in our luncheon highlights below), and our new professionals received advice from senior practitioners about serving in the non-profit sector of PR during the New Pros July event.
There is even more planned for this month. Our Blacksmith committee is working hard preparing for the annual Blacksmith Awards and our Media Day Committee is putting the finishing touches on yet another amazing Media Day, so be sure to save the date for Media Day 2011, Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Drees Pavilion. Also, if you find yourself with any extra free time, reach out to our Community Service Chair Peter Osborne, APR at peter.Osborne@strata-g.com for PR volunteer opportunities.
Happy reading!

Tom Cody, was the recipient of this years Presidents Award in honor of his use of public relations towards achieving a significant improvement in the quality of life in Greater Cincinnati. Tom is the former Vice-Chair at Macy’s, but as we learned at the luncheon, his impact on the community extended well beyond his day job. Several long-time friends, Lee Carter, Felicia Williams, Kathy Merchant and Rev. Damon Lynch, Jr. all shared |
their personal and professional experiences of Tom as well as a few humorous stories.
The Werner- Vonderhaar-Bogart Award was bestowed on Jackie Reau, CEO and Founder of Game Day Communications. The Werner-VonderHaar-Bogart Award, named after three chapter presidents who also served as national presidents, is the highest honor the Chapter can give to a member. It recognizes service to the chapter, the community, society and the profession. Jackie received the PRSA Public Relations Professional of the Year Award in 2007 and has served on many PRSA committees and is currently a Board Member and is very deserving of this prestigious award!

Blacksmith Highlight
Each month leading up to the annual Blacksmith Awards Ceremony, we’ll highlight one of last year’s winners and share a tip from the entrant that can help you with your 2011 entries.
Blacksmith Award winner for Special Events campaign:
Bethany House Ripple Effect Cabaret from Gail Myers Public Relations, LLC
Bethany House Services (BHS) is a Cincinnati area nonprofit that collaborates with others to provide a full range of housing, education and assistance programs for homeless and disadvantaged women and children. To help this local nonprofit seek additional funding during a challenged economy, Gail Myers Public Relations, LLC, provided pro bono public relations services for a cabaret fundraiser themed, “The Ripple Effect: One Person Can Make a Difference.” The lead performer was Susan Emerson, a professional singer/actress. The objectives for the event were to attract 100 guests and to raise at least $10,000 for the organization.
Gail recruited a volunteer designer and photographer to donate their time and talents for the event. The cabaret show appeared twice - once in a private preview cabaret at the home of Rebecca and David Barron, and the second at Playhouse in the Park’s Thompson Shelterhouse Theater, open to the public. Gail was part of the committee that coordinated the donated venues and food. The group kept the out of pocket budget to $10,000.
To promote the event, Gail developed a media action plan, and at regular committee meetings developed other tactics. For the first event, the tactics were personal contacts by the Barrons and their friends, and an invitation developed to attract attendance. For the public event, tactics included print advertising in City Beat, posting on calendar listings, distribution of posters, flyers and hand cards and media relations. Gail and the team also promoted the events via Twitter and Facebook. The successful event exceeded its original goal of 100 attendees at the cabaret, and it raised $32,000 for Bethany House Services.
Blacksmith Award Winner Tip: Winning entries do not always have the largest budgets, but they do require creative and strategic planning.

Google+ Adds Potential to Digital Marketing: 5 Tips to Get Started
August 1, 2011, Commpr.BIZ
Shane S. Rhyne
Since its launch one month ago, public relations and marketing practitioners have been asking themselves if Google+ will play a critical role in social media. While it is certainly too early to predict the ultimate success of Google+, I believe it is equally too early to sign the fledgling network’s death certificate.
After experimenting with the network for a month and interacting with fans and detractors of Google+, I want to offer my thoughts on why I think Google+ is a platform worth the trouble of adopting.
