President’s Letter

Yep, it’s back-to-school season. You can tell just by watching TV: back-to-school season will soon morph into election season which will shortly thereafter become holiday season. Thank goodness for DVRs!

As the kids get back into the swing of things, Cincinnati PRSA is getting the ball rolling on an incredibly busy fall.  In my 12 years with the chapter, I don’t recall another stretch of such great programming:

  • September 7: Our luncheon will focus on how to improve your bottom line by communicating more effectively with diverse audiences. The speakers will include Michael Beck of the Hispanic Chamber; Crystal Kendrick, president of The Voice of Your Customer and Chris Seelbach, vice president with The Seidewitz Group.
  • September 10: The deadline to apply for the Blacksmith Awards. We recently had a lunch-and-learn about the Blacksmiths, and we had great response and feedback from the attendees. As PR people, we are inherently deadline oriented, so don’t let this deadline slip away.
  • September 23-24: The third annual Digital Non-Conference—an event for which we partner with the AMA and ADClub. It will be held in multiple locations downtown and feature actress America Ferrera as well as speakers from Pandora, HULU and The Huffington Post.  It will also focus on the hottest topics in digital marketing, advertising and public relations.
  • October 5: Traditionally our biggest event, Media Day, is back and better than ever. CNN, AP and Jayne O’Donnell of USA TODAY will be there. Also, several Toyota executives are going to share their experiences over the last year regarding crisis communications. Registration is now open, and there are rumors of someone being roasted…
  • November 17: PRSA’s best and brightest show off their wares at the Blacksmith Awards.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our volunteers. I’m particularly impressed with the work of the Media Day committee (chair: Ashley Walters, committee: Carolyn Pione Micheli, Lauren Doyle, Elliot Campbell and Kelly Albertina) and the Blacksmith committee (chairs: Jackie Reau and Gail Myers, committee: Lauren Green-Caldwell, Kristan Getsy, Shara Clark and Lauren Doyle). Well done!

So chuck the TV and hop on board for some great programming. I’ll see you there.

Chris Kemper, APR

Cincinnati PRSA President

Mark Your Calendar - September 7

Back To School Time –Re-engage with a Fun and Invigorating lunch discussion!

A Business Case: Improving your bottom line by

communicating more effectively with Diverse audiences

and the impact of Social Media.

So, Why is Diversity Important?

Some might answer… “It’s about social justice”… “It’s about personality, thought, and culture”…”It’s about access and representation.”  While all of these responses are true, maybe the most compelling response these days is … It’s about the bottom line!”

Join us for an informative discussion and luncheon on the business case for Diversity.  Tuesday September 7th at the Phoenix.  Registration begins at 11:30. The program goes from 12pm until 1pm.

What you will learn:

  • Why a savvy marketer and public relations professional cannot afford to overlook Diverse audiences.
  • How social media is revolutionizing access to diverse audiences and strengthening buying power.
  • Getting beyond personal bias and stereotypes to relevant messaging and distribution.
  • How to find new markets and customers for your products and services
  • How promoting Diversity can be fun and can refresh a stale marketing plan
  • And why Diversity should be a part of your strategic plan

You will hear from successful marketing and public relations leaders who have proven that serving diverse markets adds to the bottom line while providing the transformational social benefits associated with Inclusion. Panelists include: Michael Beck, founder of Midwest Latino and board member of Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA; Crystal Kendrick, president of The Voice of Your Customer and 2009 NMSDC National Minority Supplier of the Year and Athena Award Recipient; Chris Seelbach, CFO/VP The Seidewitz Group Marketing Strategist and Activist.

Enter Blacksmiths - it's easier this year - really!

If you’re like us, you love to win contests but hate the work of preparing your entry. And the entry fees, YIKES! Well, we’ve made a couple of big changes to make your entries in Blacksmiths easier and less expensive this year.

Big change #1: Tactics entries are simpler. Instead of a two page summary, only a one page summary is required. Only four sections are required – description, target audience, budget and evaluation – instead of the more comprehensive summary from previous years.

Big change #2: There is no entry fee in the professional recognition categories. Enter at will for small agency of the year, mid-size agency of the year, large agency of the year, young PR pro of the year and all of these categories – no fee required.

Other changes, not so big, should also make your entry easier: We’ve clarified the rules to make them easier to understand. We’ve reorganized the categories – added some, combined some and subtracted others. We’ve given you the entry form and payment form in Microsoft Word format to allow you to complete them electronically.

Review the attached presentation for a quick summary of the rules and fees and call or e-mail us with your questions. Want to see the judging forms? Watch to see them posted on the Blacksmith page soon. Go to http://cincinnatiprsa.org/blacksmith/index.php for all the details and call us if you have questions.

Deadline is Sept. 10 – don’t put it off!

Don’t turn off that smart phone!

If you’ve been to a Cincinnati PRSA event this year, you’ve heard the announcement: “Please leave your smart phone on… so you can share with your friends on Twitter.”

At the August luncheon, for example, a handful of attendees joined @CincinnatiPRSA (shared at various events by Social Media Committee members @MikeBoehmer57, @Jericles, @laurenedoyle and @elliotcampbell) to create a great report on the #cincyprsa hashtag.

We plan to continue tweeting from @CincinnatiPRSA at upcoming events, using the #cincyprsa hashtag.

If you’ve joined us in the past, thank you! If not, please join the fun.

Whom do you suggest your fellow chapter members follow on Twitter and why? Locally, I suggest @MikeBoehmer57, @winemedineme and @writerjillie. If you’re interested in what’s happening around town, try @KatieClavey. And, for young professionals, of course @CinPRSANewPros! Nationally, I’d recommend @prsarahevans and @petershankman – both are always full of good things to say!

You're in PR which means you're interesting by default!  Tell us one fun fact about you: I love traveling. I studied abroad in London in college and can’t wait to go back.

Oxford adds "vuvuzela," "frenemy," "chill pill" to new edition of dictionary

The third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English was published yesterday, and has been updated to include "tweetup," along with many modern words such as vuvuzela, which made a name for itself as the horn often heard during this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa. More than 2,000 new words have been added to the dictionary, according to yesterday’s Telegraph.

The Internet and the financial crisis have had the greatest impact on current language spurring the addition of words like microblogging, tweetup, Paywall, netbook as well as toxic debt, deleveraging, quantitative easing and staycation. Experts and economists were previously the only ones who used many of these words, but they have now crept into everyday conversations.

National and global politics as well as climate have also influenced the changes in the new edition of the dictionary. Phrases including strategy, the fog of war, a surge (of troops) and catatrophizing as well as carbon capture and geoengineering appear in this iteration.

Other miscellaneous entries are: chill pill (a notional pill to make someone calm), bromance (a close but non-sexual relationship between two men) and frenemy (a person that one is friendly with despite a fundamental dislike).

According to the Telegraph, a spokesperson from publisher Oxford University press said that the dictionary, which was first published in 1998, is the first dictionary to be fully based on how language is really used — with words and senses derived from the latest research.
